D U D E F A Q Last updated on Jan 27, 2008 Contact: Igor Markov imarkov@eecs.umich.edu Q. Does DUDE accept formats other than PDF ? A. No other formats are currently accepted. Q. What if I have DOC, TXT, TEX and other files ? A. Convert them into PDF. For example, on Windows, you might "print" a TXT file to a PDF printer if you have the right software installed. If not, there is a number of online converters, such as http://convert.eecs.umich.edu/convert/ If you need to work with a large number of TXT files, you can try writing a Linux script for converting them into PDF. Or you can contact Igor Markov imarkov@eecs.umich.edu who may be able to add interface for TXT files. Q. But doesn't DUDE convert PDF files to TXT ? A. Yes, it does. Q. Can all PDF files be converted into TXT ? A. Not all. Therefore you need to check PAPERLog.txt produced by DUDE when it converts PDF to TXT. When converted files look very poor, DUDE removes them. In other cases, it may leave garbage around, but it will not match anything. Q. What are reasons for conversion failures ? A. If you are using an up-to-date Linux distribution, failures will be extremely rare. On older machines, PDF files with Visio images and East Asian fonts sometimes fail to convert. Q. DUDE produces warnings when converting PDF to TXT. What should I do ? A. Contact Igor Markov at imarkov@eecs.umich.edu and describe the OS environment you are using (Linux version, etc) Q. I have a question that was not answered above. What should I do ? A. Contact Igor Markov at imarkov@eecs.umich.edu and describe the OS environment you are using (Linux version, etc)
